Launching a scathing attack against Mulayam Singh for making inconsistent statements, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said that Mulayam as chief minister had refused to implement job scheme MNREGA. “It is an irony that Mulayam is now promising unemployment allowance to the youth while as CM he had denied employment to them," said Rahul Gandhi while addressing a public meeting in Mainpur on February 21 for the ongoing Assembly elections. Rahul Gandhi said visit to villages and houses of the poor, they had given him an idea that they were interested in employment near their houses. Hence, Congress (I)-led UPA government brought MNREGA scheme with massive funds of Rs 60,000 crore. It is a poverty-alleviation scheme and provides guaranteed employment to the poor for minimum 100 days @ Rs 120/- per day, thus providing income of minimum Rs 12,000 to each person. But Mulayam as chief minister refused to implement this scheme. But now just for the sake of seeking votes of the people he is offering unemployment allowance to the poor, said Rahul Gandhi. Highlighting that Mulayam is not interested in welfare of the poor but throwing about false promises to them for get their votes, Rahul Gandhi made a fervent appeal to the people to give a chance to Congress (I) to form government. He assured that a government of the poor by Congress (I) would work for their welfare and ensure that the benefits of the welfare schemes reach them.
