This is the era of internet and the social networks are becoming more and more popular. Though it has lots of benefits there are people who misuse these also. They use these modern technologies to malign any person for their own narrow gains. Some people also use judiciary, by filing baseless charges against their opponents, only with an intention to defame the reputed personalities. Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi also became a victim of such heinous attitude.
A political opponent had raised some such allegations of abduction and exploitation of an Amethi girl against Rahul Gandhi and filed a case against him. The Congress general secretary had to approach the Supreme Court to plead that the charges leveled by a former MLA of the Samajwadi Party were “false, malicious and baseless.”
The courts are the watch dog of the society and any one can approach the courts if they feel that justice is denied. But this does not give liberty to any citizen to file baseless complaints against persons of repute. The idea behind the filing of case against the young Congress leader, who is also an MP from Amethi, is nothing but to defame or blackmail the popular leader.
The government or the courts should therefore work out a strategy to control such unscrupulous activities. Such bogus allegations also steal a lot of valuable time of the honourable courts at a time the Courts are already overloaded with the number of cases.
The complainant had claimed that he had leveled charges on the alleged incident based on Internet reports. He also had alleged that the family had been abducted by Rahul Gandhi. How far the comments on the social networks can be trusted is also a big question. One, who regularly uses the social networks, can very well understand how one can use or misuse the social networks. There are a lot of fictitious or false matters spreading through internet even today. So, leveling charges, on reports read in internet should not be controlled. The administration and the judiciary should have a thorough look in these matters and try to formulate policies to put an end to such malpractices.
However, Rahul Gandhi in his affidavit before the court pleaded, “I emphatically deny the allegation of rape and detention of the writ petitioners by me and say that both these allegations are false, malicious and baseless and no cognizance could be taken by any responsible person of such allegations made on websites.”
Rahul Gandhi also had requested the court to take action against the complainant for filing a “vexatious” petition to “harm public image” and give a “political twist to the malicious allegation”.
