As BJP leader LK Advani proved utter failure in handling Ministry of Home Affairs, George Fernandes bungled up the Defence Ministry. BJP had no idea how to organize the defence of the country. As a result dozens of India’s best pilots were killed in MIG crashes. Despite the fact that Vajpayee’s Government had been requested to replace MIGs by alternative planes, the Defence Minister had chosen to endorse the safety of MIGs by flying in one of them. It was a pathetic act of bravado because the flight was conducted under controlled conditions. Between January 1998 and July 2003, 136 aircraft crashed; out of these 88 were variants of MIG. Since then there have been several more MIG crashes. The families of the pilots and the people of India cried out for safer aircraft but the Government remained unconcerned. Non-replacement of MIGs by suitable aircraft was also causing loss of hundreds of crores of rupees, but an impervious Government continued to buy questionable quality spares for MIGs.
