Indira Gandhi remembered on her 94th birth anniversary

The nation remembered former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 94th birth anniversary on Saturday. President Pratibha Patil and Vice President Hamid Ansari, Congress President UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi paid rich tributes to the leader at her memorial Shakti Sthal in New Delhi on the banks of Yamuna.
Indira Gandhi, born on November 19, 1917 was the first woman Prime Minister of India. Her father Jawaharlal Nehru was a pivotal figure in the Indian independence movement and the first Prime Minister of independent India. After Nehru's death in 1964, she became a Rajya Sabha member and was inducted in Lal Bahadur Shastri's cabinet as Minister of Information and Broadcasting.
She held three consecutive terms as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977. Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984.

Rahul Gandhi: Visits to villages give me first hand information

India’s youth icon and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has brought new dynamism in the country’s politics. He does not confine his activities to the rounds of Parliament and its committees.  He believes that the best way to understand the issues being faced by the folks is to visit the people facing the issues.  So he has been walking from village to village in affected areas to know the problems of the masses. He meets people where they are. Within the elite structure of the society in urban pockets only, India was shining. He has said, “We believe in the ideology of uplift of the poor and the down-trodden.”

Rahul Gandhi attends Bhutan King’s wedding

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, a close friend of Bhutan King Jigmey Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, is among the monarch's personal invitees to his wedding with Jetsun Pema in the historic city of Punakha. Without any preplanned schedule, he went to the house of a villager Kunjilal and expressed his wish to have dinner at his house. Rahul Gandhi was offered puri, sabzi by the household which consists of ten members including Kunjilal's two sons and two daughters-in-law. Rahul Gandhi stayed in the house for nearly half an hour. He then held a village 'chaupal' and heard the grievances of the local villagers. Late in the night, Rahul Gandhi slept at the local primary school building. He further inspected a collapsed well in Village Badarwara in Mauranipur constructed with Bundelkhand Package funds.

During interaction Rahul Gandhi took feedback on MGNREGA and also enquired whether they get proper benefit of the scheme. He also asked whether they get the timely payment under MGNREGA. Rahul Gandhi said that UPA Government at the centre sanctions funds under various schemes for the welfare of the people and if the money is not reaching to the people, it is the weakness of the state Government. Late in the night, Rahul Gandhi slept at the local primary school building.

Earlier in the day, to feel the pulse of youths in the economically backward region of Bundelkhand during a camp organised by the Youth Congress in Jhansi, Rahul Gandhi had a detailed interaction for around two and a half hours with the youths on various important issues during Yuva Drishti training camp of the youth wing.

During the interaction he asked the YC cadres to work at the grass roots level, spread awareness among the masses about the government’s version of the Lokpal Bill and Central welfare schemes. The Congress leader made an attempt to know the opinion of the youth on the relevance of Jan Lokpal Bill proposed by Anna Hazare, and also on issues like truth, ahimsa and Satyagraha.

Rahul Gandhi spoke with the youth on the position of candidates in the forthcoming state Assembly elections. He advised the youth how to strengthen the party in the state and ways to progress through good politics while urging them to strengthen the organisation by realising their responsibilities.

BJP’s inconsistency results in PAC & JPC jurisdictional overlap: Congress

It is dismaying that BJP and opposition parties have been raising irrelevant and inconsistent demands for PAC and JPC in the same matter. This has inevitably led to multiplicity of jurisdiction and overlapping.  Congress party wishes to repeat two points in brief on this account. One – Initially Congress members cried from the roof tops that a PAC and JPC will inevitably have jurisdictional clashes, multiplicity, over lapse. These very persons accused Congress government of obstinacy and delay.  Later the chickens came home to roost. The mater turned full circle. A committee chaired by a Leader of the Opposition itself found a very clear overlap and a jurisdictional challenge. Now it is for them to resolve ultimately. Congress has nothing to say. The Party feels that two committees have to resolve it amongst themselves, between themselves and ultimately if at all there can be external interference it can be only by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Congress to include genuine cases for reservation in govt. jobs

It is a matter of record and achievement of the Congress that all bonafide and genuine cases for reservation in government jobs have been included from time to time. Lately the Jats have been agitating over reservation in government jobs. The Congress spokesman has clarified that discussions are continuing. Views of all the stakeholders are being taken into consideration.  Data on the caste strength and economic background of persons seeking reservation also need to be collated. The stand of others does not drop from heaven.  There is need to discuss.  So discussions are going on.  The Congress is a democratic party and not a dictatorial party. It is worth noting that in Rajasthan, Haryana and UP the Jat community has already been included in the State list for reservations. In case the demand of that community for inclusion in the Central List is acceded, Jats would be able to secure government jobs on the basis of their reservation status.

Rahul Gandhi’s surprise visit to Gopalgarh

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi made a surprise visit to Gopalgarh to meet the families whose members died in group classes last month. Ten people died on September 14 in group clashes as a result of police firing.

It is a matter of concern is that all the dead belonged to one community.

The area where the violent incident took place has been traditionally support base for Congress Party. It was therefore appropriate that a senior party leader visited the affected area. True to his work and style, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi reached out the affected families. He met the people to ascertain the state of facts.

Congress high command had previously sent a team to the area to analyze the situation.

Rahul Gandhi takes Metro and radio-cab to reach YC function

The Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi took the Delhi metro and then used a radio taxi to reach the Japanese Park in north-west Delhi's Rohini area to attend a Youth Congress event.

Rahul Gandhi boarded the Metro from Race Course Station, next to his official resident at Tughlaq Road, for Rohini's West station. After coming out of the Rohini metro station, he took a radio-cab for his onward travel to Japanese Park, where he was to address activists of the Youth Congress.

At the Youth Congress meet, Rahul Gandhi raised the issue of corruption and said that it could be fought only through the political system. He also pitched for making organisations more democratic and involving the ordinary youth who often found politics out of their reach. "People talk of corruption. If you want to fight corruption then this can only be done through the political system, through democratic means," Rahul Gandhi said while addressing Youth Congress activists. "The biggest problem is that politics is out of reach of the ordinary youth of the country," the Congress General Secretary said. "If we make our organisations democratic, it would be a major step towards fighting corruption," Rahul Gandhi said, adding that his party was opening doors for the youth of the country to join politics.
