During her two-day visit to Raebareli Sonia Gandhi visited announced that she would always prefer to work for its development. Giving a clear indication that she would not dump her constituency, the Congress president announced a number of development schemes for the district. Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone of a four-lane Lucknow-Rae Bareli section of a 70-km road and two-lane Rae Bareli-Allahabad section of the 106 km national highway-24B. The project is worth Rs.900 crore.
"The development of UP in general is our priority. And I have resolved to continue to struggle for the growth of Rae Bareli in particular," she said at a public meeting in Feroze Gandhi College auditorium after laying the foundation stone. "The Congress-led UPA is working on several road related projects worth Rs.33,000 crore in UP.," Sonia Gandhi announced.
The Congress MP informed that the Congress-led Central government has decided to open a model school in each block of the state. "At present, we are working on 148 schools in the state, including three in Rae Bareli," she said. Sonia Gandhi also announced that a women's university in Rae Bareli, to be named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was also in the pipeline.
Sonia Gandhi is also hoping for a ring road around Rae Bareli. Later, Union minister for road transport and highways C. P. Joshi and minister of state Jitin Prasada, who accompanied Sonia Gandhi, announced that work for the ring road would be started soon.
