UPA-2 anniversary: Sonia Gandhi says the achievement of UPA is unique

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while speaking to allies at a dinner to mark the completion of three years of UPA-II on Tuesday acknowledged that the UPA can secure another mandate only on the basis of the works done by it and not promises.

"I know these are difficult times but this is no reason to feel depressed. We faced a lot of challenges in the last year inside and outside the Parliament,” said Sonia Gandhi added.

Sonia Gandhi continued, “The achievement of UPA 2 is unique. MNREGA became more effective in UPA 2 while there was expansion of health insurance. It also helped the people in the unorganised sectors. The farming sector also became much more organized. Loans to farmers have been increased,” the UPA chairperson said.

“We are determined to remove the difficulties of women and the economically weaker section. We are united to progress economically,” Sonia Gandhi said.

Rahul Gandhi: Non-Congress parties promised a lot in UP, but delivered nothing

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had said that the people of UP are fed with the promises and they want development. Rahul Gandhi was the man-in-command for the Congress campaign in Uttar Pradesh in the recently held assembly elections in the state. Rahul Gandhi had alleged that for the past 22 years the people of UP got only promises. The non-Congress leaders come to you and make promises, but disappears after the polls, repeated the Congress General Secretary.

Addressing the crowd, Rahul Gandhi continued, “You people put in hard work and develop the country. The development we witness is the result of your blood and sweat. We all know very well that blind promises cannot bring in changes. Mayawati Ji had promised that she will put an end to crimes. But the atrocities against women and corruption still continue in UP”.

“Did Mayawati come to you in the past five years? Did Mulayam do so?" asked Rahul Gandhi and the crowd responded loudly with ‘no’. “How can they tell that they will bring in changes if they do not go to the people and realize their difficulties?” Rahul Gandhi asked.

“I had gone to Mayawati’s house when Kanshi Ram Ji passed away. There is a huge wall built around her house. She doesn’t come to you and the people cannot go to her house too,” added the Congress MP from Amethi.

“We could introduce a new social concept and could give a new direction,” she said while starting her address. "UPA-II worked for the all sections of the society. Our Prime Minister explained our achievements in detail and so I will mention only about some of the points" added Sonia Gandhi.

Attacking the opposition as aggressive and irresponsible Sonia Gandhi said, “The opposition has been making very aggressive and irresponsible statements against us. But we were committed to our social service. We are focussed on progressive politics. We have always maintained etiquette and we know that we have a mandate to fulfill and we will do that. We have been trying to fulfill the expectations of the people who had reposed their faith on us,"

Congress gets ready for Karnataka polls

The Congress has been getting ready for the Karnataka polls scheduled to be held in 2013 in right earnest with Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi set to lead the charge.

Realising that Karnataka is one state where the Congress has far better chances of winning, the party is in the mission to gear up the cadre to accomplish the mission.

Rahul Gandhi is reportedly telling state party leaders that he would be visiting Karnataka more than four to five times till the Assembly elections in 2013.

Rahul Gandhi also had asked party leaders to set up a state-of-the-art computer data centre, which will be directly linked with his office in Delhi. This, sources said, will be used by him to get in touch with workers and leaders constantly through either chat or email.

Rahul Gandhi is very keen on bringing the party to power in Karnataka. As part of his proposed four or five visits to the state, the first likely visit could be his two-day visit on June 2 and June 3 to Hubli-Davangere.

Rahul Gandhi is also likely to interact with office bearers, elected representatives and Congress leaders separately.

Sonia Gandhi: People will judge us on our deeds, not on promises

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while speaking at a dinner to mark the completion of three years of UPA-II on Tuesday acknowledged that the UPA can secure another mandate only on the basis of the works done by it and not promises.

She said the Centre is funding the states much more than ever before. “The Centre is financing the states in a record manner so that bigger goals can be achieved,” Sonia Gandhi said.

"We have always shown our determination and collective goal. These days, there is a notion that there are several challenges for India's development. Definitely it is a tough period for all the countries and we are not an exception. But there is no scope for disappointment," she said. "We are together in ensuring the positive economic growth rate of the country," she added.
She said since UPA took charge of the government, India has been advancing on the growth map in a sustained manner because of which it has been able to provide money for projects of social and rural development. "Because of this the Centre has been able to give that kind of financial assistance to the state government which was never seen earlier," Sonia Gandhi said. She also stressed that the government has to sustain the momentum of this development.
"We are aware that only two years are left when we will be seeking a new mandate from the people. We are fully aware that the result of that will not depend on our promises but on the nature of work done by us," she said.

“We should continue our committed works to ensure the happiness and progress of the entire people in the country” concluded the Congress President.

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi attended the first anniversary celebrations of the third term of the Congress government in Assam. She congratulated Tarun Gagoi government in the state for the overall development and prosperity in the state.
Sonia Gandhi said that today is a day of celebration for the Congress party. 'But at the same time we realise the huge responsibility the people of Assam has reposed in us and we renew our pledge to serve them better to take them on the path of peace, development and prosperity,’ she reminded.

Addressing the people in the brass city Moradabad the Congress President blamed the non-Congress parties for spreading hatred, terror and anarchy in Uttar Pradesh.

“These are parties that follow the divide and rule policy and you should beware of such forces” warned the Congress President. “It is only Congress that does not treat the people on the basis of caste and religion. The BJP, BSP and SP filled their own coffers and it is because of them that UP has lagged behind. UP, at one time, was the glory of the nation and we must work towards regaining that pride,” said Sonia Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi then explained various welfare policies brought in by the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre and said that it was the Congress that set up Sachchar Committee and later implemented its recommendations for the welfare of minorities.

The Congress President added that the Congress led Central government had sent over 1 lakh crore under various schemes to Uttar Pradesh but all the money went in corruption and scams. “We (Congress) have designed our maximum programmes for the deprived sections of society. For women, apart from reservation in panchayats, the Congress has introduced several health schemes but the benefit of all this obviously did not reach you,” informed Sonia Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi continued, 'We are aware of the situation at the time we had formed our first government in the state eleven years back. Assam was in a state of chaos and disarray. Insurgency was at its height, the treasury was empty, government employees were not paid salaries, development was at an all-time low, industries and industrialists were fleeing. There were no proper roads, adequate electricity and it was rampant anarchy across the state. The people were scared to move out of their houses after the evening”.
Explaining about the efforts of the Congress government, the UPA Chairperson said “Soon after the Congress Government took charge of the state, it took immediate measures to solve these problems. I feel very happy today to see the changed face of Assam. We could achieve this because of the combined efforts of the Congress-led government and the people in the state. Narrating the achievements of the Congress-led Government in Assam Sonia Gandhi said, “There has been a marked improvement in the condition of roads while there has been increased investment in the power sector. Eight lakh BPL families have been provided with electricity under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana. Several new schemes have been undertaken for empowering women like strengthening of self-help groups and under Panchayati Raj women were given reservation of 50 per cent. For the development of all sections of society including SC/STs, backward castes, indigenous communities, the government has set up eight autonomous councils and 18 development councils. Assam has also taken full advantages of National Rural Health Mission. I have been told that the people are receiving much better health care and facilities”.

Expressing hope for a better future for farmers and labourers, she said, "The funds given to the farmers have become stronger and programmes like Aadhar will help in ensuring more benefits to the poor people."

Rahul Gandhi: SP, BSP make empty promises, vanish after elections

Addressing a mammoth election rally in Noida as part of his recent campaign for Congress for the last UP assembly polls, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had said that BSP and SP cheat the people by making empty promises. “During elections they come with promises and vanish thereafter” said the Congress MP from Amethi.  

Taking a jab at the SP’s poll promises, Rahul Gandhi said, “Mulayam Singh Yadav now promises free electricity in the entire UP. He was the Chief Minister thrice. I still remember that the people used to receive hefty bills, though there was no adequate electricity. There is no power house built in the past 22 years and so how can he provide free electricity?” 

Informing the gathering about the Congress led Centre’s approval of relief package for drought-hit Bundelkhand, Rahul Gandhi continued, “When the people in drought-hit Bundelkhand were crying for relief neither Mulayam Singh Ji nor Mayawati Ji found it necessary to pay a visit there. I had gone to different villages in the region to ascertain the gravity of the situation. The Congress led Centre had sanctioned a relief package for the affected region”. Rahul Gandhi then alleged that the funds sent under the relief package were also plundered by the BSP ministers. “The money meant for well and water went to their pockets,” alleged the Congress MP from Amethi.

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while addressing a huge poll rally in Moradabad recently, as part of her Congress campaign for the UP assembly polls, had said that the non-Congress parties – BJP, SP and BSP – follow the divide and rule policy like the British. “For the past 22 years these non-Congress have been trying to divide the people in the name of caste and religion. They are following the policy of divide and rule,” alleged Sonia Gandhi.

“There is a glorious past for this historic place where a number of people sacrificed their lives during the freedom struggle. There was a time when all materials were imported from outside to India. But after the Independence Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru along with our other great national leaders helped the country to stand on its own feet” said the Congress President recalling the contributions of our great national leaders. “The entire people in our country also played a crucial role in it, especially the people of Uttar Pradesh.  Uttar Pradesh was the pride of our country then,” added Sonia Gandhi to the cheering crowd.

Sonia Gandhi asked what the situation in Uttar Pradesh at present is. “Because of the divisive polices of the non-Congress parties like BJP, SP and BSP the state of UP has now lost its way. Rahul Gandhi: Mayawati’s politics has been without any principles

Attacking BSP chief Mayawati for running the most corrupt and non-responsive government, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said her politics has been without any principles. Arguing that Mayawati has been playing unprincipled politics to remain in power, Rahul Gandhi appealed to the people to vote for Congress (I) this time in their own interest. Sonia Gandhi sends ‘Chadar’ to Ajmer Sharif

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi sent a "Chadar" to Ajmer Sharif as an offering at the revered shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishti's dargah on the occasion of Urs.
The Dargah is hosting the religious fair or "Urs" marking the 800th death anniversary of the Sufi saint. Millions of devotees from all across the world visit the saint's shrine during the Urs ceremony.
Moin-ud-din Chisti is believed to have been born in 1142 AD. Since his ancestors belonged to a town named Chisti, people began calling him by that name. Chisti, who preached tolerance and unity of all religions, died in Ajmer where his tomb has become a shrine for millions of people.
In 1236 AD, the saint entered his cell to pray in seclusion for six days, at the end of which he died. Since then Urs has been celebrated for six days every year. It is believed that praying at the tomb of the saint fulfils a person's wishes.

 May 21st will be observed as Anti-Terrorism day to commemorate the death anniversary of our former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. On his way to address an election campaign he was garlanded by many school children and party well wishers. Assassin Dhanu got an opportunity to mix with the crowd and execute her merciless, treacherous plan. Rajiv Gandhi’s murder had left the whole nation in shock and emotional outburst.

Since then, the day is celebrated as Anti-terrorism day in the honor of our former Prime Minister. The purpose of celebrating this day every year is to keep our youth away from indulging in such wrong activities risking their lives along with risking lives of several other innocent people.

Congress just implemented it. This scheme is not meant for any particular caste or religion, but for the entire poor,” argued the Congress leader.

“You visit any of the Congress ruled states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala or Haryana and ask anyone in the villages about MNREGA. They will admit that they have been benefitted by this scheme. But the people of UP could not avail its benefits. Mayawati Ji says that this policy is not beneficial for UP. SP and BJP ask from where we will have the money for the same” concerned Rahul Gandhi. “This money is the result of the hard work put in by the poor in the country. Rahul Gandhi’s campaign boosts the youth’s imagination for development

Attacking Mayawati for neglecting development of the most populous state of the country, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had said that the youth is now impatient for change.  “Why the youth is not getting employment in their own state”, Rahul Gandhi had asked while addressing public meetings for the recently held Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh in which he had led the Congress campaign. Congress (I)-led UPA government launched MNREGA – a flagship scheme – for providing guaranteed employment to the poor, Rahul Gandhi informed.  It is a poverty alleviation scheme which guarantees minimum 100 days job for the poor at a daily wage of @ Rs 120, ensuring minimum yearly income of Rs 12,000. While this scheme is a great success in Congress ruled states, in UP Mayawati stole the money and the poor got nothing, argued the Congress leader. Commenting that the youth in UP is hardworking, talented and capable of bring the change, Rahul Gandhi said, the youth needs some one to hold their hands and lead them. This has boosted the morale of the youth who are turning to Rahul Gandhi for leadership. Responding to the feelings of the youth, Rahul Gandhi has exhorted them to vote for Congress and  assured that Congress (I) will unleash their potential to develop UP to No 1 state in the country.
